Driver X of ESPN.com/ESPN Magazine fame posted a ESPN.com column entitled “NASCAR’s Man Behind the Scenes” about MMI founder Cary Agajanian in response to another Player X column about deal makers in their sport (NBA).  Although it has been several weeks from the post, no driver has stepped forward to claim responsibility.  It is the assumption around the MMI offices that Cary knows, but won’t tell.  It takes a man behind the scenes to know, Driver X would likely say.

MMI’s Cary Agajanian got a surprise at his week’s annual The Racing Attorney Conference (TRAC) when they presented him with an award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Motorsports Law.  Cary, along with MMI’s Bill Anthony, attended and spoke at the conference this week at the Ritz-Carlton in Uptown Charlotte.  It came as no surprise to the audience, however, as Cary has long been credited as one of the first recognized attorneys focused on motorsports and protecting the interests of the industry from all aspects (tracks, promoters, driver, sanctioning bodies, etc.).

A U.S. District Court judge in Pittsburgh has dismissed a 2-year-old antitrust lawsuit by Specialty Tires of America Inc. (STA) against Hoosier Racing Tire Corp. and World Racing Group Inc., saying STA did not demonstrate it had sustained injury due to antitrust activities. STA sued Hoosier in October 2007, alleging Hoosier was using its monopoly power in the dirt oval track market to eliminate competition for the sale of racing tires.  MMI’s Cary Agajanian, a board member of World Racing Group, called the ruling “an extremely beneficial and important decision in motorsports in all of America.” Cary added, “It was most heartening that the court fully understood and set forth in its opinion the significance of the rights of a sanctioning body to make reasoned and fair rules and enforce those rules. The court pointed out several other areas that are properly and legally controlled by sanctioning bodies such as motors, transmissions, chassis construction, etc. Who better than the people that operate the sport to decide what is safe to both competitors and fans, to create parity and close competition, and have economical and efficient operations?”

Inside NASCAR article

Inside NASCAR article

MMI made the home page at NASCAR.com as one of their Inside NASCAR feature articles that takes an in-depth look at the industry.  Writer Joe Menzer spent some time with MMI to try and get an understanding of who MMI is, what we do, and how it all began.  Founder and President Cary Agajanian gives great insight into the foundation of MMI while Rod Moskowitz and Jeff Dickerson talk about the early years when the company was just finding traction.  They gave Joe so much material, that he claims his first draft was 7,000 words.  It got edited down for the internet, but it’s still a long, but interesting inside look at the company.
